removing bloatware from the cliq xt

i am going to assume you know what your doing here. you will seriously mess your phone up if you dont. i was using windows for this.

you need to have your phone rooted to do this.

adb start-server
adb devices
adb shell su
cat /proc/mounts
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

now the system folder is remounted as rw and you can do as you wish.

to list packages:
pm list packages -f

to uninstall an app:
pm uninstall com.app.name.whatever.it.is

to remove an app:
rm /system/app/AppName.apk

to disable an app:
pm disable AppName.apk

i highly recommend you move the app you want to remove to a .bak instead of deleting it!!

root on the cliq xt

i have only done this on the motorola cliq xt. i dont know what else it works on.

make sure when you plug the phone in via usb it is on charge only. also, make sure to have usb debugging enabled (settings > applications > development)

1) install the android sdk from here

2) install the motorola drivers from here

3) download and extract this zip archive

4) open up the command prompt and do the following steps:

  • adb devices, this should list the device attached
  • for the next few steps i am going to assume the root_cliq folder is in d:
  • adb push d:root_cliqSuperuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
  • adb push d:root_cliqsu /sdcard/su
  • adb push d:root_cliqrageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
  • adb push d:root_cliqinstall-root.sh /data/local/tmp/install-root.sh
  • adb shell
  • cd /data/local/tmp
  • chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
  • chmod 0755 install-root.sh

make sure you phone stays attached to the pc!!

5) now, on the phone, download and install a terminal emulator. i use connectbot.

6) open the terminal emulator and do the following steps:

  • cd /data/local/tmp
  • ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin

wait until you see this on the screen:
[+] Forked xxxx childs.

then close out of the emulator.

7) re-open the terminal emulator and do the following steps:

  • /data/local/tmp/install-root.sh
  • (if the script prints nothing, then it was successful)
  • exit
  • exit

now you have rooted your phone.

great android software

here is a list of the apps i am currently using for my apad. i will add more as i review them.

aldiko
this is an awesome eReader. combine this with calibre and you have a veritable force which easily rivals kindle. i myself prefer aldiko due to the features offered inside of the app, as well as its excellent book navigation.

astro file manager
a great file browser. it allows you to back up all the currently used apps to your sd card, so if you flash your firmware like i do, and lose all your apps, you can easily restore them using astro.

remotedroid
use your apad / android device as your keyboard and mouse for your pc. very easy to use and setup and use.

taskiller
this one allows you to close all your applications with a click. you can also select ones to kill or view. very handy little tool.

andftp
ftp, sftp and ftps support. great little client app. i used it all the time to grab a file off my desktop, the server, etc.

flashing the apad

i used this site a lot for finding out how to flash the firmware.

i also saw here that the apad was unable to support any version of android newer than 1.5. however, here there are some people currently working on porting android 1.6 over to the apad.

i have been reading as much as i can concerning the apad and the new firmware developed by roger braun. i downloaded hybrid rom 6 beta and flashed my apad last night. the process went very well. noticeable improvements were: wifi range (only 3-5 ft), touch screen was more responsive, sound quality marginally better, and screen brightness.

here is a fast and dirty how to for flashing your apad. please do not do this if you afraid to brick your apad. also, this is not for the blue led apads.

1) download and extract the firmware update tool found here

2) download and extract the firmware. i used roger brauns hybrid 6 beta

2) power off the apad, switch the bottom on/off switch to off. then turn it back to on.

3) while the apad is off, press and hold the menu button and plug in the usb cable to the apad and pc. continue to hold the menu key until step 5.

4) windows will recognize the apad and you will need to specify the driver for it (the driver will located in the firmware update tool folder you unzipped earlier, it is called rk28usb-new)

5) run RKandroidDM.exe, found in the RKAndroidTool folder you unzipped in step 1.

6) click on the button below the words New Firmware Information, and navigate to the firmware you downloaded and extracted in step 2.

7) click the update button and wait. this process can take up to 6 minutes. once it is done, a message will pop up and say its completed. the apad will then boot. once it is successfully loaded you will be prompted to calibrate the touch screen. do so. then enjoy your new firmware!

eken m001 7″ tablet

i really want one of these. from what i have seen so far they are less than $200. the reviews say that the touch screen is sluggish (you can kind of see this in the video. i am still going to hold out on getting a tablet pc for now. i want to see what is going to be coming out in the near future.
