i needed to scan a couple documents today to send to the mortgage company. i have a hp psc 1410 all-in-one. my desktop was already in windows so i went to scan a document and windows kept telling me there was no printer hooked up. i check the usb cable, made sure the proper drivers were installed and made sure it was being recognized as a printer and could work. still couldnt get it to work.
so i gave up on windows. i cant stand windows anyways and was irritated with myself for thinking that it would work, simply because the drivers were installed and i had scanned once before and it worked fine.
so i rebooted into slcakware, ran the
hp-scan command (hplip tools was already installed). cups recognized my printer just fine, but hplip said there was no device detected. after a few attempts and google searches i found (and should have realized now in retrospect) that my user account needed to be a member of lp and scanner groups. i sudo’d the groups file and added myself to those groups and now i can scan via terminal using
so basically i should have just used slackware in the first place.
